Indie hacking has a specific kind of pain: you're not short on ideas. You're short on bandwidth. You need a decent landing page, a half-truthless validation pass, and copy that doesn't sound like it came from a startup phrase generator-all while you're also building the thing.

The usual advice is "use AI." Cool. The part people skip is that AI doesn't really "do" outcomes. It does responses. And when you're solo, you don't have time to babysit vague responses into shippable assets.

So I'm going to give you a tight prompting workflow that treats your AI like a junior teammate with a checklist. The trick is to stop asking for "a landing page" and start running short, repeatable loops: small decisions up front, structured outputs, and brutal review passes before anything goes live.

What's interesting is that this lines up with what research is seeing in "vibe coding" style workflows: human direction is the lever. When the AI tries to drive the direction, performance can collapse across iterations; when the human keeps directional control and delegates evaluation or execution, outcomes improve [2]. Another thread of research lands on the same point from a different angle: non-experts get better results when the system forces intent to become a set of small, low-burden decisions instead of one big vague request [1]. You can copy that approach in your prompts today.

The core system: steer in tiny decisions, then generate

Here's the mental model I use: you don't want one mega-prompt. You want a three-part loop.

First, force clarification with a handful of concrete choices. Second, generate the artifact in a strict format. Third, run a critique pass that is allowed to be rude, specific, and non-cheerleading.

This is basically "interactive oversight" without the fancy UI: break ambiguity into smaller decisions, propagate those decisions forward, and only then let the model produce a big deliverable [1]. It also mirrors what works in collaborative vibe coding setups: humans are better at high-level instructions; AI can help evaluate and iterate if you keep it on rails [2].

If you only take one lesson from this post, take this: the fastest way to ship solo is to turn prompting into a product workflow. Not a creativity slot machine.

Prompts to ship a landing page in one session

You're going to do this in two stages: first, lock the offer. Then, generate page sections.

Prompt 1: Landing page "PRD-lite" (15 minutes, saves you days)

You are my product + copy lead. I'm a solo founder and I need a landing page that can convert.

Ask me 7 questions, one at a time (wait for each answer). Keep questions concrete and non-technical.

You MUST cover:
1) who this is for (ICP)
2) the painful moment they're in
3) the promised outcome
4) what makes this different
5) the smallest credible proof I can show this week
6) the single CTA I want (pick ONE)
7) objections that will block signup

After the 7 answers, output a "Landing Page Brief" with:
- One-sentence positioning
- 3 bullet value props (problem-first)
- Proof plan (3 proof assets I can produce fast)
- CTA and friction audit
- Voice/tone rules (what to sound like + what to avoid)

Why I like this: it forces the model into the interview role before it becomes the writer. That's exactly the kind of structured intent elicitation that improves alignment in longer tasks [1].

Prompt 2: Section generator with strict structure

Using the Landing Page Brief below, write landing page copy with these sections in order:

1) Hero (headline, subhead, CTA button text, 1-sentence "for who" line)
2) Problem (3 short paragraphs, no fluff)
3) Solution (what it does, how it works in 3 steps)
4) Differentiation (3 comparisons vs alternatives)
5) Proof (placeholders for proof assets)
6) FAQ (6 Q/As, include pricing objection + trust objection)
7) Closing CTA (repeat promise + CTA)

Rules:
- Short sentences. Concrete words.
- No hype language ("revolutionary", "seamless", "leveraging", "cutting-edge").
- If a claim needs proof, add [PROOF NEEDED] inline.
- Write at an 8th-10th grade reading level.

Landing Page Brief:
<<<
PASTE HERE
>>>

This is deliberately formatted. Structured outputs reduce the "AI wrote a blog post instead of a landing page" problem. Also notice the inline proof flags: you're creating your own little verification hooks, which is the human's job in these workflows [2].

Prompts to validate ideas without fooling yourself

Most indie hackers don't fail because they can't build. They fail because they build the wrong thing for too long.

You want prompts that behave like a skeptical cofounder. But you also want them to behave like a researcher: separating assumptions from evidence, and telling you what to test next.

Prompt 3: Assumption map + cheapest tests

Act as my validation analyst. My goal is to avoid building the wrong thing for 3 months.

Here's my idea:
<<<
Describe: customer, painful job-to-be-done, proposed solution, how I'd charge, and my unfair advantage.
>>>

Task:
1) List the top 10 assumptions this idea depends on (numbered).
2) For each assumption, label it:
- Demand, Ability-to-reach, Willingness-to-pay, Differentiation, Delivery/ops, or Trust
3) For the top 5 riskiest assumptions, propose the cheapest test I can run in 48 hours.
Each test must include: setup, exact message/script, success metric, and what would falsify it.

Rules:
- No encouragement. No "great idea".
- Prefer tests that produce real commitments (email reply, pre-order, calendar booking).

This is you staying in the driver's seat. Research on vibe coding collaboration suggests humans provide uniquely effective high-level instructions across iterations, while AI-led direction can drift or collapse [2]. Validation is a direction problem.

Prompt 4: Make the AI argue against your positioning

You are the "Positioning Prosecutor." Your job is to disprove my landing page promise.

Input:
- ICP:
- Promise:
- Mechanism (how it works):
- Price:
- Alternatives:

Output:
A) The 5 strongest reasons the ICP won't care.
B) The 5 strongest reasons they won't trust it.
C) The 3 most likely "already solved" competitors (even if indirect).
D) Rewrite my promise into 3 sharper versions that are harder to argue with.

I like this because it makes objections explicit and usable. You can feed the objections right back into your page FAQ and your outreach scripts.

Prompts to write copy solo (and make it not sound like AI)

Copy is where indie hackers waste time: endless rewriting, tone drift, and generic mush.

Two things help. First: prompts that explicitly anchor to customer language. Second: an enforcement layer-because prompting is a suggestion, but constraints are a wall.

A practical example from the community nailed this: instead of only trying to prompt away "AI voice," they added lint rules that ban specific phrases and force design-token usage; the "wall" compounds over time [4]. You can do a lightweight version of this even if you're not building ESLint rules: maintain a banned-phrases list and run a final pass that hunts them.

Prompt 5: Customer-language mining (your best "anti-AI" trick)

You are a customer language miner.

Source text (reviews, Reddit comments, support emails, tweets):
<<<
PASTE TEXT
>>>

Output:
1) Exact phrases people use for the problem (verbatim quotes)
2) Exact phrases for desired outcomes (verbatim quotes)
3) "Trigger moments" (what happened right before they looked for a solution)
4) Words they use to describe bad solutions (verbatim quotes)
5) A draft of:
- 5 headlines
- 5 subheads
- 5 CTA buttons
All must reuse the audience's words where possible.

This forces specificity. It also helps you avoid hallucinated pain points.

Prompt 6: The "ship it" critique pass (copy + page)

Act as a tough conversion-focused editor.

Here's my draft:
<<<
PASTE COPY / PAGE
>>>

Score it 1-10 on:
- clarity in first 3 sentences
- specificity (vs vague)
- proof and credibility
- CTA strength
- "sounds like AI" risk

Then:
1) List the top 7 fixes as direct edits (quote the line, then the replacement).
2) Provide a final rewritten version.
Rules: keep it shorter than my draft.

If you want to go one level more "systematic," steal the idea of building a reusable "meta prompt" that sets defaults for your whole session-tone, constraints, and "ask one question if vague." People are already packaging this as a personal toolbox prompt because it reduces re-explaining context [3].

Practical example: one prompt chain you can run today

If you only have an hour, do this sequence.

Start with Prompt 1 to get your Landing Page Brief. Then Prompt 2 to generate the page. Then Prompt 4 to prosecute the positioning. Then Prompt 6 to rewrite with teeth.

If you're building something more complex than a static page, add a final step where you ask for a checklist of what must be true in the shipped artifact, and then test against it. There's strong evidence in agentic web dev research that evaluation and testing loops matter because models can fake "interactivity" without real data flow; development-oriented testing catches that [5]. For indie hackers, the translation is simple: add a verification step for every claim and every CTA path.

Closing thought: prompts are leverage, but steering is the job

The biggest trap with AI as a solo founder is letting it decide what you meant. That's where drift happens. Keep direction human. Make the model do structured work: interview, draft, critique, rewrite. Small decisions first, big outputs second. You'll ship faster, and you'll ship fewer fantasies.

If you try one thing from this post, run the "PRD-lite" landing brief prompt and notice how much calmer the rest of the work feels. That's not magic. That's you turning vague intent into a system.
